Cast: Jessica Biel, Bill Pullman

Two seasons of the show ‘The Sinner’ have been produced over the last couple of years. Both chronicle the investigation of Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) into two unrelated murder incidents. In this review, we will examine the first season in this series titled ‘Cora’.

A day out on the beach turns into bloodbath when Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel), married to Mason Tannetti and mother to the toddler Laine, inexplicably stabs a stranger Frankie Belmonte to death in a sudden fit of rage. Detective Ambrose is called in to investigate but it seems as though his presence would only be a formality as Cora confesses immediately and pleads guilty in court. Ambrose however finds this situation implausible and decides to dig more into the case anyway. Ambrose himself seems to be going through a trying time on the personal front as he lives separated from his wife and family. The investigation leads down a dark, heavily guarded path with some bloody secrets and unreconciled guilt threatening to be exposed. Cora has a past too, a difficult upbringing in an ultra-religious family along with a sister who is terminally ill but quite audacious too. Will Ambrose really succeed or will Cora’s confession be allowed to stand in court?

The show is currently available to stream on Netflix in India. This is a must watch and it also sets the tone for the next season in the franchise, though that has an unrelated story line (more on that later)!
