Director: Kalees

Cast: Jiiva, Nikka Galrani

‘Kee’ is another from a recent list of films that try to examine the world of hackers, geeks and cyber-villains. Siddharth aka Sid (Jiiva), a genius hacker, stumbles on to the operations of a notorious cyber gang that blackmails people into committing gory crimes by hacking into their digital accounts (definitely inspired by the ‘Blue Whale’ deaths, one would think). His identity now revealed, he himself becomes a target as he threatens to foil the gang and their menacing plans.

‘Kee’ definitely touches upon a few relevant topics in its narrative. There’s this scene where the hacker takes total control of a woman’s car and drives it off a bridge, taking her life in the process. Though this looked highly illogical at first, in the context of self-driving, autonomous cars just around the corner, you wouldn’t completely rule out something like this happening for real soon (though whether the director really intended us to justify the scene like this, I’m not quite sure)! There’s also the highly sensitive topic of the access kids have to various computing devices and this has been written into a stunning scene where a kid inadvertently plays a part in another gory murder, not knowing anything about it of course. Unfortunately, apart from this, the script lacks any kind of coherence or creativity. There’s the over cooked father-son thread that gets annoying beyond a point, a bunch of characters who get introduced and vanish without any real influence, a romantic track that is tiresome and songs that are placed so poorly that they stifle any momentum that could have possibly gathered. The killer punch comes right at the climax, where the chase between Sid and the gang is just downright hilarious and the sheer asininity of it all settles the matter for good. At the end of the film, you do come to believe that anything could be hacked up, except perhaps a really good script!
